The High Court on Thursday, sitting in Maitama, Abuja, altered the bail condition given to Godwin Emefiele, the immediate former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.
In November, the court granted Emefiele bail in the amount of N300 million, with two sureties in the same amount.
Justice Hamza Muazu had ordered that each of the sureties own landed property worth N300 million within the court’s jurisdiction, together with a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O), which must be submitted with the court registrar, who would have to authenticate the property.
Emefiele was ordered by the court to surrender his travel documents and remain in Abuja during the trial.
However, at Thursday’s hearings, Emefiele’s attorney, Matthew Burkaa, SAN, informed the Court that the defendant submitted a request on January 10 to vary the bail condition so that he might travel inside the nation.
He requested the court to change the conditions for his client.
Prosecuting lawyer Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, did not oppose to the application, but instead requested the court to guarantee that the defendant remained in the nation during his trial.
He also requested that the defence team provide a commitment that their client will remain in the country.
In granting the application, Justice Muazu ordered Emefiele to remain in Nigeria until his trial.
