Court restrains Sokoto govt from dethroning two monarchs

A Sokoto High Court has ordered Governor Ahmed Aliyu not to dethrone the state’s two traditional rulers.

On Thursday, the sitting court, Justice Kabiru Ibrahim Ahmed, issued a separate ruling as requested by the District Heads of Tambuwal and Kebbe, Buhari Dahiru Tambuwal and Abubakar Kassim.

Justice Ahmed directed the Governor, the state’s Attorney General, and the Sokoto Sultanate Council, their agents, servants, privies, or assigns, to halt action, particularly against the Kebbe and Tambuwal monarchs, pending the hearing and determination of the motion for interlocutory injunction filed by their counsel, Ibrahim Abdullahi SAN.

The court issued a directive to “maintain status quo and stay all actions and further actions in connection with all matters dealing with and or appertaining to the removal and or dethronement of district heads in Sokoto State.”

This happened after the state administration had already removed both monarchs, along with 12 others, for suspected insubordination and inciting unrest in the state.

The governor also submitted a bill to the State Assembly requesting a modification to the state Local Government Law, which passed a second reading on Wednesday and was then forwarded to a House Committee.

If enacted, the law, which is scheduled for a public hearing on Tuesday, would give the governor exclusive power to appoint and dethrone traditional rulers, as well as district and village chiefs throughout the state.
