David Adeleke, a.k.a. Davido, a prominent Nigerian singer, has recalled how his rich father, Chief Adedeji Adeleke, sent police to arrest him multiple times at the beginning of his career. The singer of “Omo Baba Olowo” claimed that at first, his father opposed his desire to pursue music and rather that he concentrate on his studies.
Davido recently featured on Ebro in the Morning Show on Hot 97FM, New York, USA, on the heels of his album release. The musician said that on multiple occasions, his father dispatched police officers to arrest him and interrupt performances at which he was scheduled to appear.
In his words,
“He sent police to get me like he sees a billboard; for example, ‘Davido performing, Wizkid performing’. He will send police to arrest everybody.”
When asked why his father had instructed the police to arrest him, Davido responded-
“So I can go back to school.
“He kept on doing it. Then there was one time. This is where I knew that ‘Oh I’m lit!’. They [the police] came and got me. Then I’m in the cell and the dude that got the keys his phone rings, it’s my song. I said ‘That’s me’. He said ‘You’re Davido?’. I said ‘Yes!’. And he let me go.”
Davido said when asked if his father had given up trying to have him arrested:
“I finished school. But I had to do like a part-time stuff. Not that he hated music [he just wanted me to be done with school]. And I feel like, he wants that whatever I’m going to do, I have to be successful, very successful.”
He added that his dad is proud of him now, and he is his number one fan.
