Nigerian award-winning Afrobeats singer, Davido, has cautioned African Americans against relocating to Africa, citing the continent’s current economic challenges.
Speaking during an appearance on the Big Homies House podcast, the global music star expressed his concerns about the growing trend among Black Americans considering a move to Africa.
Davido didn’t hold back in describing the harsh realities many African citizens face, particularly with the economy in a poor state. He highlighted the irony of locals paying more for homegrown oil compared to imported alternatives, describing it as a sign of systemic mismanagement.
“It’s not cool back home. The economy now is in shambles,” he said.
While clarifying that he wasn’t trying to badmouth Africa, Davido explained that his goal was to showcase the continent’s beautiful aspects while leaving out the struggles. He acknowledged that entertainment often acts as a smokescreen, creating an illusion of prosperity for outsiders.
Davido’s remarks sparked divided opinions among fans and netizens. While some agreed with his assessment, others criticized him for painting a bleak picture of Africa:
- @Dairyofacanadianmum: “No lies told. If you can japa now, just leave. There’s no point.”
- @MightyRoyal1: “Sad reality, tell them we dey suffer. Our eyes don see shege.”
- @Iamemzzi: “And your family join they lost the country.”
- @_adunni: “He didn’t lie though.”
Despite his criticism, Davido has often expressed pride in his Nigerian roots. In a 2022 interview, the Grammy nominee revealed his love for returning to Nigeria after international gigs, stating that “there’s no place like home.” He also urged the Nigerian government to improve the country’s governance, emphasizing the nation’s untapped potential.
In April, Davido reflected on his growth as an artist and how his success has helped elevate Nigeria’s global image. He recalled a time when Africans would misrepresent their heritage, claiming to be from Jamaica, but noted that times have changed, with African culture now being celebrated globally.
