Nigerian musical sensation Davido recently took to Twitter to share his disbelief and disappointment after experiencing a minimal turnout at his concert in Abuja.
In a video that he posted, the visibly shocked artist revealed a sparsely populated hall, leading him to question if it was a prank. Davido expressed his surprise at the low attendance and pondered whether the people in Abuja weren’t interested in the show.
This incident has ignited discussions about the dynamics of concert attendance in different regions, with some opinions suggesting that pride in Abuja might influence the audience’s response, creating a scenario where artists have to wait for the audience.
This development adds to a series of controversies surrounding Davido this year. Just a couple of months ago, he faced scrutiny for not performing in Asaba, Delta State, despite allegedly receiving a substantial payment exceeding a hundred million Naira. The incident led to public criticism, and Davido later addressed the situation by committing to perform in the coming month.
Davido has also been involved in controversies related to alleged debts, defended by some celebrities. Additionally, he had a public spat with Big Brother Nigeria’s winner, Phyna, involving a social media feud where fatherhood and family matters were brought into question.
In response to reports about the low turnout at his Abuja concert, Davido commented on a blog post with a cap emoji, a slang symbolizing disbelief or the creation of a false narrative.
The slow turnout could be attributed to the various controversies Davido has been embroiled in this year, including a cheating scandal, alleged debts with business partners, and a failed contract with Amaju Pinnick.
On a positive note, this year brought several blessings for Davido, with recognition as an “Outstanding Georgia citizen” and official declarations of “Davido’s Day” in Atlanta and Georgia. His comeback album, “Timeless,” garnered over a billion streams, making him a Grammy nominee with three nominations for Best Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Global Music Album at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
Davido, reflecting on his nomination, affirmed that delay isn’t denial, especially considering the prior recognition of his contemporaries, Burna Boy and Wizkid, by the Grammy academy.
