Death toll rises as cholera rages in Lagos, Oyo, Kano

Lagos is shivering as a cholera epidemic spreads. A severe intestinal ailment has overtaken the state, adding terror to the already crowded streets. As of Friday, July 21, 2024, there were 24 deaths, 35 confirmed cases, and 417 suspected cases across the state. Experts believe the epidemic is a local struggle for life, particularly in places where access to clean water and good sanitation is still a luxury.

Aside from inadequate water and sanitation, individuals’ living conditions leave much to be desired.

With few resources and a heavily populated metropolis to cope with, Lagos struggles to contain the spread.

Unfortunately, water and sanitation remain an issue throughout the state. Potable water remains an issue from the end of Makoko to the affluent parts of Victoria Island in Lagos, despite the fact that water is available throughout the city.

According to a situation report provided by the state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, last Friday (EPI Week 25), as of June 19, 2024, the outbreak had spread to all 20 LGAs.

While the highest outbreak happened in Ajeromi, Kosofe, Epe, Ikorodu, Alimosho, and Eti-Osa LGAs as of June 10, 2024, the Commissioner stated that rigorous personal and environmental cleanliness was required to avoid infection risk.

However, in what appears to be an attack on cholera in countries, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared a cholera revival globally.

According to WHO, 46,364 new cholera cases were recorded from 19 countries in May 2024, representing a 58% rise over the previous month.

It said that from January 1, 2024 to May 26, 2024, 194,897 cholera cases and 1,932 fatalities were reported in 24 nations across five regions.
