Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s chances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), foreseeing a strong performance from the Super Eagles. Drogba, while acknowledging Nigeria’s impressive squad and potential success, emphasized his loyalty to Cote d’Ivoire.
Nigeria, among the tournament’s favorites, aims for a fourth AFCON title in Ivory Coast. Despite concerns about their pre-tournament form, the Super Eagles rebounded with a 1-0 victory against the hosts after a challenging opening fixture against Equatorial Guinea.
When asked about Nigeria’s prospects, Drogba, optimistic yet mindful of his own nation’s aspirations, stated, “They(Nigeria) can go far, but we(Cote d’Ivoire) have to finish in front of them. It’s the celebration of football. Of course, I want Ivory Coast to win, but the best team has to win, but if it’s Nigeria, fair to them and well done to them.”
Nigeria concludes its group stage against Guinea-Bissau, where a victory would secure their position at the top of Group A. Drogba’s insight adds intrigue to the AFCON narrative as the Super Eagles pursue continental glory.
