Francis Nwifuru, the governor of Ebonyi State, said on Thursday that his administration has formed a committee to combat medical quack medicine and apprehend those who practice it.
He revealed this to reporters soon after Mrs. Lilian Nwobasi, the 11th President of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) Ebonyi State chapter, was sworn in.
Nwifuru, represented by Mr. Moses Ekuma, the commissioner for health, observed that the state government was willing to work with the Association to combat gender-based violence and female genital mutilation.
He said:
“The state ministry of health is ready to eradicate medical quackery in the state; that’s why the state anti-quackery was inaugurated.
“The committee has been doing its best to ensure that medical quacks are shown their way out of Ebonyi State. This is because they cause more harm than good. Their activities have resulted in lots of untimely deaths of our people.
“What we want to do now is to partner the Medical Women Association and involve communities in the fight against medical quackery in the state.
“Before anybody should set up a medical facility, they must show evidence or a signed document showing that the ministry of health has satisfied such a person fit to embark on such a thing,” he stated.
“There is no confirmed case of cholera outbreak in Ebonyi State. It has not come to my notice that there is any outbreak of cholera in the state,” he added.
