Twelve days before the end of Godwin Obaseki’s eight-year term in Edo State, the state Accountant General, Mr Julius Anelu, and four government officials were allegedly detained by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives.
The officials were allegedly taken into custody for being signatories to the state government’s accounts.
According to a source within the Edo agency, the personnel are being held at the agency’s Benin zonal headquarters.
According to the sources, they were detained on Thursday after being called in for a briefing.
It was also revealed that agency officials aim to hold the jailed workers until November 12, when the departing governor of Edo State’s term ends.
The arrest of the officials was said to have interrupted government activity since civil workers’ salaries, pensions, and other public servant benefits had not been paid.
The arrest also had an impact on other mandatory payments, such as security costs and other duties.
When asked for confirmation, the EFCC spokesperson in the Benin Zonal office in Edo State, Williams Oseghale, just referred our reporter to the Commission’s spokesman, Dele Oyewale.
When approached via phone, Oyewale responded using a Short Messaging Service, instructing reporters to submit a text message.
But, as of the time of reporting this article, Oyewale has failed to react to the message sent to his phone.
