Elon Musk Slams Remote Work as ‘Morally Wrong’ – Calls for Return to Office

In a recent interview with CNBC on May 17, Tesla CEO Elon Musk made headlines with his strong condemnation of remote work, describing it as “morally wrong” and unfair to service workers who are required to physically show up for their jobs. Musk’s views on the matter go beyond concerns about productivity, as he believes being in the office enhances efficiency and also carries a moral weight.

Drawing a comparison to a quote often attributed to Marie Antoinette, Elon Musk expressed his scepticism toward the concept of working from home, saying, “I think that the whole notion of work from home is a bit like the fake Marie Antoinette quote,

Let them eat cake’. It’s not just a productivity thing. I think it’s morally wrong.”

Elon Musk criticized the perceived hypocrisy of expecting service industry workers to continue working on-site while others enjoy the privilege of remote work. He passionately argued against the moral high ground associated with working from home, exclaiming,

Get off the goddamn moral high horse with the work-from-home bulls**t… It’s messed up to assume that, yes, they have to go to work, but you don’t.”

This is not the first time Elon Musk has expressed his strong stance on returning to the office. In June 2022, he implemented a strict policy mandating a minimum of 40 hours in the office per week for Tesla employees, threatening job termination for non-compliance. Musk’s advocacy for a return to the office stems from his belief that the “laptop class” is disconnected from reality, living in a world of their own.

While Elon Musk’s views have sparked debate, his influence as a tech mogul and CEO cannot be overlooked. As the discussion around remote work continues, his strong stance and insistence on a return to the office are bound to have an impact on the broader conversation about the future of work and the balance between remote and on-site work arrangements.
