In a groundbreaking turn of events, Yemi Mobolade, an independent candidate and Nigerian immigrant, has been elected as the mayor of Colorado Springs, making history as the first black man to achieve this political feat in the municipality located in Colorado, United States.

Despite having minimal experience in politics, Mobolade emerged victorious in the city’s runoff contest held on Tuesday night, May 16, defeating his Republican challenger, Wayne Williams, according to a report by The Colorado Sun. The political landscape of Colorado Springs has experienced a seismic shift as a result of Mobolade’s remarkable win, especially considering his independent status compared to Williams’ Republican affiliation.

With 57% of the vote in his favour compared to Williams’ 43% as of 7:15 pm on Tuesday, Mobolade secured a decisive victory. Williams graciously conceded the race at around 7:30 pm, and subsequent vote counts confirmed Mobolade’s lead.

As the 42nd mayor of Colorado Springs, Mobolade will succeed Mayor John Suthers, a former federal prosecutor and Colorado attorney general who reached his term limit. Reflecting on his triumph, an overwhelmed Mobolade exclaimed,

Wow. Wow. I am speechless. This is our win.”

In his statement, Mobolade expressed a vision of an inclusive, culturally rich, economically prosperous, safe and vibrant city, heralding a new era for Colorado Springs. Having relocated to the city in 2010, Mobolade has risen to positions of leadership within the local community, demonstrating his dedication to civic engagement and public service.

Married and a proud father of three, Mobolade has made significant contributions to Colorado Springs. Notably, he served as the city’s small business development administrator and co-founded two well-known eateries, The Wild Goose Meeting House and Good Neighbours Meeting House, in the city, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit.

Additionally, he held the role of vice president of company expansion and retention at the Colorado Springs Chamber and Economic Development Corporation.
