The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) has reported a remarkable 287.76% increase in enrollment for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs across Nigeria.

Registrar Dr. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed revealed that candidate registrations for technical college entrance examinations jumped from 7,546 in 2024 to 29,260 in 2025, attributing this unprecedented growth to education reforms championed by Minister of Education Dr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa.

The announcement came during the release of 2025 National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) results in Benin City, where 24,074 candidates sat for the June 14 nationwide examination across 32 Federal and 171 State Technical Colleges.

Gender statistics showed 16,206 male candidates (67.32%) and 7,868 females (32.68%) participated, with 5,186 registrants (17.72%) absent. This represents a dramatic increase from the 2024 figures of 5,197 males and 2,349 female candidates.

Dr. Mohammed highlighted the ministry’s strategic promotion of TVET programs covering 17 engineering trades, 7 construction fields, 8 miscellaneous vocations, and 4 business disciplines. He praised the education ministry’s leadership for implementing policies that align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasising skills development for industrialisation and economic self-sufficiency.

Performance analysis revealed 9,389 candidates (39%) scored above 50%, with 316 (1.31%) achieving over 70%. However, 14,685 (61%) performed below the 50% benchmark, while only eight candidates (0.03%) attained the highest scores.

The registrar emphasised these results demonstrate growing interest in technical education while underscoring the need for improved learning outcomes as Nigeria expands its vocational training infrastructure.

This enrollment surge reflects the government’s successful rebranding of technical education as a viable career path and marks significant progress in addressing the nation’s skills gap through hands-on training programs designed to boost youth employability and entrepreneurship.
