Vincent Enyeama, the iconic former goalkeeper of Nigeria, expressed his aspiration to lead the Super Eagles as head coach. Despite his eagerness, he disclosed two reasons for abstaining from applying for the vacant coaching position after Jose Peseiro’s departure.
Enyeama, a vital figure in Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, cited the lack of coaching certification and his commitment to managing his hotel business as hindrances to pursuing the coaching role. Notably, several former Nigerian internationals expressed interest in succeeding Peseiro, who guided the team to the 2023 AFCON final.
In an interview with Afrik-Foot, Enyeama emphasized his dedication to acquiring coaching credentials and prioritizing his business ventures. While acknowledging the common trajectory of goalkeepers transitioning into coaching roles, Enyeama aimed higher, aspiring to manage the entire team rather than focusing solely on goalkeeping duties.
With 101 appearances for the Super Eagles, Enyeama remains Nigeria’s most capped goalkeeper. Despite his retirement from professional play in 2015, his vision extends beyond the goalposts, envisioning himself orchestrating success for Nigeria from the touchline.
