Everton Football Club has lodged an appeal against their recent points deduction, marking their second penalty this season for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules. The club faces a two-point deduction following a violation totaling £16.6 million over the three-year cycle leading up to the 2022–23 season.
Earlier in the season, Everton incurred a ten-point deduction, subsequently reduced to six points, for similar breaches during the evaluation period preceding the 2021–22 season. The appeal announcement came following confirmation from the BBC.
The current deduction stems from an independent panel’s determination that Everton exceeded the allowable limit under the profit and sustainability regulations. As a result, they currently occupy the 16th position in the Premier League, with a precarious two-point cushion above the relegation zone.
Despite the appeal, Everton’s future remains uncertain, especially considering potential further deductions related to interest expenses associated with the construction of their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock. The hearing for the appeal must conclude by May 24, just after the Premier League season’s conclusion.
