British-Nigerian doctor Olamide Orekunrin-Brown has highlighted research indicating that female breadwinners are at higher risk of experiencing domestic violence. She tweeted that the more money a woman gives a man, the more likely he is to abuse her.
Research reveals that the chance of a woman suffering domestic violence increases by 35% when she earns more than her male partner. Furthermore, female breadwinners are 20% more likely to suffer emotional abuse. A ground-breaking Australian study shows that men are more likely to commit violence against their female partner if she earns more than half of the household income.
This phenomenon is not limited to low-income households. Educated and wealthy women experience domestic violence in the same way that poor women do. Education reform in Turkey raised women’s awareness of their legal rights, but it did not lead to significant reductions in the incidence of domestic violence.
