The Federal Government has disbursed nearly N50 billion directly to Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across Nigeria through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF).
The announcement was made by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate, who detailed the administration’s significant investments in revitalising the country’s primary healthcare infrastructure.
Professor Pate explained that the BHCPF is designed to be financed from at least one percent of the Federal Government’s Consolidated Revenue Fund, alongside contributions from donor agencies.
The fund’s primary objective is to provide a Basic Minimum Package of Health Services, thereby increasing the fiscal space for health and strengthening the national health system. He confirmed that from 2023 to the present, nearly N50 billion has been transferred directly to primary health centres managed by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, leading to verifiable and impressive results in the qualitative modernisation of health infrastructure across all local government areas in Nigeria.
In a related development, the Tinubu administration has also released over N20 billion specifically for the rehabilitation and upgrade of 4,362 Primary Health Centres across the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory. The minister noted that similar impactful projects have been carried out in the southern states, ensuring a nationwide upgrade of essential health facilities.
The minister also highlighted the success of the government’s health insurance initiative, with enrollment figures expected to surpass the 2024 record of 2.4 million citizens later this year. A key indicator of the system’s improved accessibility and efficiency is the recording of over 37 million visits to primary health centres in the first quarter of 2025 alone. Professor Pate described this surge as evidence of a successful, data-driven re-engineering of basic healthcare provision for the nation.
