The Federal Government has significantly reduced the cost of kidney dialysis in federal hospitals across Nigeria, cutting the price of a single session by 76%.
Under the new policy approved by President Bola Tinubu, the cost of dialysis has been reduced from an average of ₦50,000 to a subsidised rate of ₦12,000 per session.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, who stated that the move is aimed at easing the financial burden on Nigerians suffering from kidney disease. Many patients require multiple dialysis sessions per week, making treatment unaffordable for most.
Bwala explained that the subsidy is part of President Tinubu’s commitment to improving healthcare accessibility under the Renewed Hope Agenda. “This intervention will bring immediate relief to thousands of citizens battling kidney-related diseases,” he said.
The new pricing is already in effect at ten major federal medical centres and teaching hospitals across the country, including the Federal Medical Centres in Lagos, Abuja, Owerri, and Abeokuta, as well as the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).
Other hospitals benefiting from the subsidy include the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Federal Medical Centre Azare, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), and University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
Bwala added that more hospitals will be included in the program before the end of the year to expand nationwide access. He also recalled President Tinubu’s earlier approval of free cesarean sections (C-sections) for pregnant women in federal hospitals, emphasising the administration’s commitment to making healthcare more affordable.
The subsidy is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for kidney patients, many of whom previously struggled to afford life-saving treatment.
