Governor Alex Otti has commissioned a multi-purpose hospital erected by the Federal Government under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Obeaja, Ugwunagbo LGA, Abia State.
The hospital, which has 100 beds, was started by former President Muhammadu Buhari and finished by President Bola Tinubu.
While launching the facility, Abia State Governor Alex Otti congratulated President Bola Tinubu for finishing the hospital and transforming it into a multi-purpose hospital to meet the health requirements of the rest of the community.
He vowed that the Abia State government would take over management of the new hospital, stating that 24-hour security, more land for the construction of physicians’ quarters, and a facilities management staff would be required to ensure high standards.
Otti, who expressed joy that Abia State’s maternal mortality rate has dropped dramatically to 136 from 1047 in 2020 and 531 in 2022, as revealed by the Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, assured that maternal mortality would continue to fall in the state.
He bemoaned that Nigerians spend between $1.6 billion and $2 billion on medical tourism each year, but promised that his administration will create a medical village to combat the tendency.
