Kayla Lovdahl, an 18-year-old who transitioned from girl to boy and later de-transitioned, filed a lawsuit against California doctors and a hospital.
She is suing them for rushing her through her gender reassignment without adequate psychological screening and for failing to consider her age.
Kayla’s lawsuit claims that doctors prescribed her puberty blockers and testosterone at 12 and a double mastectomy at 13 before realizing the mistake at 17.
Kayla’s lawsuit seeks damages against the Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and four individual doctors for deviating from the standard of care by allowing rapid transition without appropriate psychological care.
The lawsuit also highlights how the hospital and doctors allegedly mishandled the situation, leading to Kayla’s condition, which resulted from a single evaluation session. Kayla developed the erroneous belief that she was transgender based on this single evaluation.
Lastly, the lawsuit raises important questions on the appropriate approach to gender treatment for minors, psychological assessment, and support in such cases.
