According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), more than 40,000 people die each year in road accidents in Nigeria.
Corps Marshal Dauda Biu spoke on Monday in Abuja during activities marking the 7th United Nations Global Road Safety Week. Mr. Biu noted that 1.3 million people die, and about 50 million are injured yearly.
Citing road traffic accident reports, the FRSC said one of every four fatalities occurred to pedestrians and cyclists. CM added that the United Nations had developed a global plan for the Decade of Road Safety Action 2021-2030. This action plan sets the ambitious target of reducing road traffic casualties by 50% by 2030. Biu said;
“Ensuring safety must be at the core of efforts to re-imagine mobility. Therefore, road networks must be designed with the most at risk in mind,”
The 7th UN Safety Week focuses on sustainable transport with the slogan #RethinkMobility, which promotes walking, cycling, and public transportation.
