Nollywood actress and box office filmmaker Funke Akindele has recounted how singer Dbanj played a pivotal role in sustaining her popular Jenifa brand.

Speaking at the singer’s 20-year entertainment industry anniversary dinner, Akindele revealed that Dbanj encouraged her to keep the brand alive during a chance encounter.

Akindele shared that she met Dbanj for the first time at a club, where he inquired if she was working on more sequels to Jenifa. When she told him no, Dbanj expressed surprise and emphasized the potential of the Jenifa brand. He encouraged her to continue developing the series, explaining that she could profit from it for years to come.

To show his support, Dbanj gifted Akindele money to work on more sequels, which led to the creation of *The Return of Jenifa*.

After the big break with Jenifa, everybody loved Jenifa so much. I was out there, and everyone was celebrating me. I was invited to a club where I met Dbanj for the first time. He gave me his number and inquired if there was a sequence to Jenifa. I told him no, and he questioned why, noting that Jenifa is a brand I can feast on for the rest of my life. He told me that when you have a brand, you feed on it, milk it very well, and make money out of it. Out of his pocket, he gave me money and said I should go write another Jenifa and supported me with the money.”

Akindele praised Dbanj for being more than just a musician, highlighting the joy his music brings to people’s hearts and the lasting impact of his legacy.

Dbanj, you’re more than just a musician; you’re a movement! Your music has brought joy to our hearts, and your legacy will live on forever.”

The actress’s tribute was shared widely on social media, with clips from the event being posted by platforms like CrowdailyNG and HipTv. The story resonated with many fans, showcasing the powerful influence and support within the Nigerian entertainment industry.

In related news, Dbanj recently honoured his former business partner and Mavins founder, Don Jazzy, acknowledging that his journey would be incomplete without him. He shared a video of inviting Don Jazzy to his anniversary dinner, highlighting the lasting bonds and mutual respect among industry peers.
