Gary Neville Criticizes Manchester United’s Handling of Greenwood ‘Situation’

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has given his opinion on the recent announcement that Mason Greenwood will be leaving Old Trafford.

In response to United’s decision, Neville acknowledged it as the “right decision” but expressed concerns about the process leading up to it.

The announcement comes following an internal investigation, which resulted in Greenwood’s departure from the club. The young striker had faced serious accusations earlier this year, including attempted rape and assault. These charges were subsequently dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

United’s decision was met with backlash from fans, who were caught off guard after reports last week suggested Greenwood’s return to the first-team squad. Ultimately, the club chose to part ways with the player, with the statement explaining that it was mutually agreed upon for Greenwood to continue his career away from Old Trafford.

Gary Neville, speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football broadcast, applauded the decision but criticized the club’s handling of the situation. He emphasized the need for independent review and authoritative leadership on matters as significant as domestic abuse allegations.

While Manchester United’s decision marks the end of Greenwood’s time at the club, his statement expressed a desire for personal growth and learning from mistakes. He thanked the club for its support throughout his journey and acknowledged his commitment to becoming a better person both on and off the pitch.
