The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, approved a climate change agenda to address concerns about its impact on the state.
On Saturday in Osogbo, the governor’s spokesman, Malam Olawale Rasheed, released a statement to announce the approval of the agenda. The announcement stated that the climate agenda was part of the state government’s efforts to mark World Earth Day. Furthermore, the statement highlighted that the new agenda included the development of state climate change mitigation and adaptation policies.
Notably, the agenda contained plans for establishing the state’s Climate Advisory Board. The plan includes launching climate-tracking research units at state universities and preparing the state’s annual energy report. Besides, the statement noted that hosting the post-COP 27 conferences for sub-national entities in Nigeria was part of the agenda.
The meeting decided to establish and operate a Loss and Damage Fund.
Governor Adeleke stated that the approval of the climate program was a fulfillment of his election promise to address the looming environmental crisis facing Osun and the wider world.
According to the Governor:
“I take note of global climate crises, and I believe we cannot leave the issue to the Federal Government alone. States must actively participate in the movement to save the planet from imminent extinction. Our climate agenda is all-inclusive.”
According to the statement, Adeleke, on Earth Day, directed the announcement of the climate agenda to reconfirm his administration’s resolve to make Osun the most climate-friendly state in Nigeria.
“Our administration will invest in making Osun a truly green economy by mainstreaming climate matters in health, education, infrastructure, finance, mining, technology, and gender and youth matters.
“Our state will become truly resilient and emerge as a strong partner in the climate adaptability movement,” he said.
Earth Day is celebrated yearly on April 22 to protect the planet from pollution and deforestation.
