A violent attack by suspected members of the Lakurawa criminal group left three mobile police officers dead and several civilians injured in Zogirma village, Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The assault occurred on Friday evening around 5:00 pm, coinciding with a scheduled cash distribution program intended for local residents.
According to security analyst Bakatsine, the disbursement team had not yet arrived in the village when they received warnings of a potential security threat, prompting them to cancel the trip.
However, the armed assailants, travelling in pairs on two motorcycles, proceeded with the attack. Though they failed to intercept the funds, the gunmen opened fire indiscriminately on civilians, causing multiple injuries. One victim sustained a severe gunshot wound to the abdomen, with reports indicating that internal organs were exposed due to the severity of the injury.
The three police officers stationed to secure the distribution point were ambushed and killed at the village entrance. Their deaths marked a tragic outcome in what appeared to be a foiled robbery attempt.
The incident has heightened concerns over rising insecurity in the region, particularly targeting government aid programs and financial transactions.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the attack or confirm whether any arrests have been made. However, the brazen assault underscores the persistent threat posed by armed groups in Kebbi State and the challenges faced by security forces in protecting vulnerable communities. Investigations are expected to continue as residents call for increased security measures to prevent future attacks.
