Nollywood actress Halima Abubakar has taken legal action against the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) following her indefinite suspension.

The Guild had suspended Halima for defamation of high-profile Nigerians and her colleagues, alleging that she engaged in slander and an extramarital affair with a prominent individual.

In response, Halima, through her legal representatives P.D Pius & Associates, filed a lawsuit against AGN, seeking N30 billion in damages for reputational harm. She expressed shock at the suspension, stating that she was never invited to defend herself before the announcement circulated on social media.

Her lawyers condemned the AGN president’s actions, accusing him of deliberately attempting to tarnish her image. They demanded the immediate removal of the defamatory publication and an unreserved public apology from the Guild within seven days.

The letter from her legal team also emphasized that Halima has been dealing with severe health issues for years, and this action has caused her emotional and psychological distress during a delicate recovery period. The letter further noted that if her demands were not met, they would pursue further legal action in court.

Halima’s suspension came as a surprise to many, especially as she had just announced a return to Nollywood earlier this year, exciting fans who were eager to see her back on screen.

Reactions to the lawsuit and the actress’s situation flooded social media, with many netizens sharing mixed opinions on the case:

  • @TontoloFabrics commented, “2024 is all about Love & Lawsuits.”
  • @AkpobaSahmarian said, “As funny as it sounds, I like her reaction to this case.”
  • @TheFoodNetworking joked, “Where dem dey collect law school form? I wan go change profession.”
  • @Melhor_Omezi quipped, “Where he wan see that money? Federal government budget?”
  • @GiftAdene noted, “30bn?? What’s your worth, girl? It’s too much, although they didn’t have to spoil her name that hard.”

Halima has also had a tumultuous past, including an altercation with Apostle Johnson Suleman that left her bedridden in 2022. Despite rumors of an autoimmune disease, Halima had debunked those claims with a medical report. Recently, she issued a public apology to Apostle Suleman, admitting to making false allegations against him and seeking his forgiveness.

With this ongoing lawsuit against AGN, it seems Halima is standing her ground and fighting for what she believes is a case of defamation and reputational damage.
