The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Wuse Zone 2, has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of late Nigerian gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging. This verdict follows the court’s determination that he was responsible for her untimely death.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme delivered the judgment on Monday, stating that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt. As a result, the court found Peter Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide, sentencing him to death under Count 1.
In addition to the death penalty, Nwachukwu received varied sentences for other charges, including two years of imprisonment on multiple counts, six months on one count, and fines of N500,000 and N200,000 on additional counts.
Before the sentencing, his counsel, Reginald Nwali, appealed for leniency, while prosecuting counsel Mrs. Aderonke Imala urged the court to uphold the law.
This case traces back to April 2022 when reports surfaced that Osinachi Nwachukwu, a celebrated gospel artist, had passed away following allegations of domestic violence at the hands of her husband. Despite initial claims suggesting cancer as the cause of death, statements from her family, church members, and neighbors painted a different picture, prompting an investigation.
The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation arraigned Peter Nwachukwu on June 3, 2022, on a 23-count charge, including culpable homicide, spousal abuse, cruelty to children, and other offenses.
