In a setback for Brazil, Manchester City’s goalkeeper Ederson has been ruled out of the Copa America 2024 after suffering a fractured eye socket. The injury occurred during a Premier League clash with Tottenham, when Ederson collided with defender Cristian Romero.
The Brazil Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed Ederson’s exclusion from the squad on May 19, 2024. This injury not only sidelines him for the prestigious South American tournament but also forced him to miss Manchester City’s title-clinching final league game and will keep him out of the upcoming FA Cup final against Manchester United on May 25.
Brazil coach Dorival Junior has called up veteran goalkeeper Rafael from Sao Paulo to replace Ederson. Rafael, 34, is set to make his senior debut for the national team, bringing experience but lacking international caps.
Liverpool’s Alisson Becker is now expected to be Brazil’s primary goalkeeper for the tournament. Brazil aims to secure their 10th Copa America title and is drawn in Group D, alongside Colombia, Paraguay, and Costa Rica. The tournament in the United States kicks off on June 20.
As Ederson embarks on his recovery, he will be watching from the sidelines as both Manchester City and the Brazilian national team strive for glory in their respective competitions.
