Bala Mohammed, the governor of Bauchi State, denied threatening President Bola Tinubu.
He made it clear that his comments were a criticism of measures that he felt may be detrimental to Nigerians.
Following a statement from the Presidency urging him to back off of his alleged “threat” to the President about the contentious tax reform proposals, the governor responded.
The Bauchi governor’s remark, “We will show President Tinubu our true colour,” was cited by the Presidency as being unstatesmanlike and detrimental to national unity.
Earlier, Governor Mohammed had denounced Tinubu’s administration’s tax measures, claiming they were unjust to northern Nigeria.
Mohammed said, “If you ignore the cries of the people, you are inviting anarchy. These reforms are not helping northern Nigeria. How do you expect us to pay salaries and build roads when you are taking away our revenue sources? This is unacceptable.”
During last weekend’s Christmas observance at the Government House in Bauchi, Mohammed spoke to the Christian community and remarked,
In a press release headed “Re: Presidency’s Misleading Statement on Governor Bala Mohammed’s Remarks on Tax Reforms,” which was signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, the governor claimed that his remarks were obviously misinterpreted.
According to the statement, Mohammed’s comments were meant to serve as a warning, making sure that the suggested tax changes are equitable, inclusive, and mindful of Nigeria’s socioeconomic difficulties.
The statement reads:
“It is mischievous to take Governor Bala Mohammed’s honest advice about the dangers of implementing unfavorable policies as a threat to the Presidency.
“The Governor deeply respects the institution of the Presidency and would never engage in threats or hostility.”
Governor Mohammed’s priority has always been on promoting policies that safeguard common Nigerians, especially those in economically challenged areas, and encouraging conversation, the statement added.
