Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has stirred up reactions with her candid revelation about the reasons behind the breakdown of her marriage to Abounce Fawole.
In an interview on The Honest Bunch podcast, she disclosed that she walked out of her marriage because she felt she was contributing more financially than her ex-husband. This revelation has sparked a divisive response on social media.
Jegede expressed regret over prioritizing love over financial stability, stating,
Today, I’m taking care of my son like nobody exists around me. It’s not easy. I would have gone for money instead of love.” She also highlighted the challenges in her marriage, explaining how her ex-husband perceived even light-hearted jokes as disrespect due to their age gap, with him being eight years older than her.
The actress’s candid remarks have divided social media users, with some offering support and empathy while others criticized her for airing her grievances publicly. Comments ranged from admonitions about financial independence to reflections on gender dynamics in relationships.
One user underscored the importance of financial autonomy for men, cautioning, “Once my gender gets money, they think they own heaven’s gate. As a man, never allow any woman to feed you.” Conversely, others commended Jegede for speaking out, praising her courage in sharing her experience.
Jegede’s marriage to Abounce Fawole, son of late actress Bukky Ajayi, ended shortly after the birth of their son, Xavier. In subsequent interviews, Jegede has accused Fawole of being a “deadbeat father” who has shown little interest in their son’s life. Despite the challenges she has faced, Jegede remains grateful for her son, acknowledging his role in bringing fulfillment to her life.
Reflecting on her experiences with heartbreak, Jegede posed a thought-provoking question to her fans: Which is worse, loving someone who doesn’t reciprocate your feelings or being loved by someone you don’t love? Her openness about her struggles with love and relationships has prompted introspection among her followers.
