Medical personnel at the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Owerri are now working to save the eyes of Nigeria Labour Congress President Joe Ajaero.
Ajaero was detained by Imo State Police Command officers on Wednesday while spearheading a demonstration in the state.
However, the command stated that he was just rescued from a crowd and placed in protective custody.
In a viral video, Ajaero can be seen seated between two guys while being transported to the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri.
In the video, the NLC head stated that he didn’t have a phone with him but had a relative working at FUTHO who he thought might help.
Meanwhile, NLC authorities denounced the event as a horrific act of attempted murder.
Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Information and Publicity, described the treatment of Ajaero as an abduction that degenerated into attempted murder.
“Contact has been made with Congress President, Joe Ajaero, this evening around 15:30 hours at the Police Hospital in Owerri from where he was taken to Federal Medical Centre, Owerri where he is receiving medical attention.
“Thoroughly brutalised, his (Ajeoro’s) right eye at the time of contact was completely shut,” Upah said.
