The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has pointed out deficiencies in the petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In a statement on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, stated that the petition did not fully meet certain requirements.
The recall petition against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was submitted by constituents from the Kogi Central Senatorial District, along with six bags of documents containing signatures from over half of the district’s 474,554 registered voters.
Olumekun explained that while INEC acknowledges receipt of the petition against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the commission’s review process identified procedural shortcomings.
He assured that INEC remains committed to following due process and will communicate further actions in line with electoral laws.
The recall process is a constitutional provision allowing voters to remove elected officials, but it must adhere to strict guidelines, including verification of signatures and a referendum. INEC emphasized that any recall effort must comply fully with legal and procedural standards before moving forward.
