Nollywood actor and filmmaker Ibrahim Yekini, popularly known as Itele, has addressed the backlash he’s received from fans after expressing his support for music superstar Wizkid.
Over the past few days, Itele has been showcasing Wizkid’s songs on his Instagram posts, which has sparked a wave of criticism from some of his followers who aren’t fans of the singer.
In response, Itele took to Instagram to clarify his stance, urging his followers to stop attacking one another over his choice of favorite artist. The actor explained that anyone who knows him understands that he openly supports the people and things he loves, and right now, he is a proud fan of Wizkid.
I’ve been noticing some reactions lately because I’ve been posting Wizkid’s music. To those who feel upset, I want to say this: we shouldn’t attack each other just because I chose my favorite artist,” Itele said in his post. “If you know me well, you’ll understand that this is my style. I love something or someone, and I show it openly. That’s how I believe love should be expressed.”
He also reassured his true supporters, stating that his social media presence often features music from various artists, and his recent posts are simply about sharing what inspires him. He encouraged his followers to continue supporting him and not let his love for Wizkid drive a wedge between them.
Please, don’t dislike me for loving Wizkid! And don’t stop loving me for being true to myself,” he added, emphasizing the importance of love and positivity in these discussions.
This isn’t the first time a Nigerian celebrity has faced backlash for expressing their support for certain artists. Similar incidents have occurred in the past, including Big Brother Naija winner Phyna, who faced criticism for supporting Wizkid during his rivalry with Davido. Phyna had responded to the backlash with a lighthearted tweet, stating that Nigerians should pay her for the mental distraction.
Also, Tiwa Savage recently hit back at Wizkid fans who criticized her for releasing a song on the same day as Wizkid, calling them bullies for trolling her music online. In the midst of these ongoing fan feuds, Kizz Daniel also weighed in, commenting on how he respects the hard work of artists like Wizkid and avoids disrespecting them, despite the rivalry between their fans.
