Nigerian Afrobeat artist Iyanya has spoken out after a Twitter user criticized Davido for allegedly not reciprocating Tekno’s support.
The controversy began when a user, Oba, posted on the micro-blogging platform, accusing Davido of neglecting Tekno, who had once given him a hit song.
Oba recounted how Davido, in a past interview, shared that Tekno had uplifted him during a challenging time in his career, providing a fully recorded hit song and promising it would be successful. However, after Tekno’s struggles, including throat surgery, and his public request for a feature on Davido’s next album, he was reportedly ignored. Oba expressed disappointment, saying, “One would think one good turn deserves another… but not in the Nigerian music industry.”
Iyanya quickly responded, defending Davido and cautioning the user against spreading misinformation. He tweeted: “Don’t tweet what you don’t know.”
The incident revived a discussion about Davido’s appreciation for Tekno. In a 2022 interview, Davido had credited Tekno for transforming his career and expressed lifelong gratitude. However, Tekno had openly requested a collaboration that same year, humorously stating that if Davido didn’t feature him, they should stop being friends. Media critic Daniel Regha also weighed in, advising Davido to prioritize writing his own lyrics, emphasizing that authenticity is crucial in music.
