The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has enlisted the expertise of education technology specialist Alex Onyia, CEO of Educare, to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the significant failure rates observed in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
This decision follows widespread concerns from parents, students, and education stakeholders regarding the examination’s outcomes.
Out of approximately 1.9 million candidates who participated in the 2025 UTME, over 1.5 million scored below 200 out of a possible 400 marks, prompting calls for a thorough review of the examination process.
Reports have surfaced alleging technical glitches and incomplete questions during the examination, raising questions about the integrity of the testing process.
In response, JAMB has tasked Onyia with conducting an independent and transparent review to identify any systemic issues that may have contributed to the poor performance.
Onyia confirmed his involvement via a post on the social media platform X, stating that he received a formal invitation from JAMB to transparently conduct a thorough review of the 2025 JAMB exam.
He assured affected candidates that the investigation aims to address their concerns and uphold the examination’s credibility.
While the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, attributed the mass failure in JAMB to the effectiveness of anti-malpractice measures, many Nigerians have expressed scepticism, emphasising the need for a detailed examination of the testing process.
The outcome of this investigation is anticipated to provide clarity on the factors contributing to the mass failure and to inform potential reforms to enhance the fairness and reliability of future UTME administrations.
