Nollywood actor Jide Awobona has urged his colleagues to avoid letting emotions dictate their interactions with domestic staff, particularly when dealing with theft, even of small items.
This comes after a domestic worker stole $100 from his wallet, leading him to rethink his approach to employee relations.
Awobona shared his experience, revealing that he previously overlooked minor infractions until one of his staff members took $100, believing it would drastically change his life.
I think it’s high time we stopped applying emotions in relating with our domestic staff, when they steal as small as chewing gum like this new one did, take it up…that’s how I overlooked a lot until the previous one stole $100 from my wallet,” he advised.
He emphasized the importance of letting employees perform their duties, get paid, and move on without maltreatment. However, he warned against becoming overly attached or emotional, noting that such relationships often don’t yield reciprocal feelings of loyalty or love.
Awobona’s advice resonates with other incidents in the industry. In December, actor Alesh Sanni exposed a cleaner from Ekiti who allegedly stole N3.2 million and valuable items, including gold jewelry. Despite his generous nature, Sanni learned a hard lesson about trusting appearances.
Similarly, actress Ruth Kadiri expressed gratitude after recovering her stolen Range Rover, thanks to the efforts of businessman Ned Nwoko and others. The theft was attributed to one of her workers, underscoring the recurring issue of domestic staff misconduct.
Veteran actress Carol King also shared her story of betrayal, where a maid absconded with $700 and €40, prompting her to warn the public about the thief.
