Former President Goodluck Jonathan has praised previous sessions of Nigeria’s National Assembly for their assertiveness and independence in legislative matters.

Speaking at the Champions of Nigerian Content Awards Dinner hosted by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Jonathan highlighted the importance of a legislature that can act decisively and autonomously.

During his address, Jonathan recalled his tenure as Acting President in 2010 when he signed the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Bill into law.

He credited the National Assembly for its proactive role in presenting the bill, which led to the establishment of a monitoring body to oversee its implementation.

Jonathan specifically acknowledged Senator Lee Maeba of Rivers State and his colleagues for championing the bill, describing that period as one when the National Assembly truly fulfilled its legislative responsibilities.

Jonathan also cited the passage of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Act in 2000 as a significant example of legislative independence.

He recounted how the National Assembly overrode then-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s refusal to assent to the bill, demonstrating its commitment to the interests of the Nigerian people.

In his remarks, Jonathan emphasised the need for the current legislature to uphold the principles of democracy by maintaining its independence and acting in the best interests of the nation.

He urged lawmakers to continue building on the legacy of their predecessors by standing firm in their legislative duties and ensuring that the voices of the Nigerian people are heard and respected.
