Nollywood actresses Kate Henshaw and Etinosa Idemudia have voiced their strong disapproval regarding the recent viral video showing a Catholic priest striking an altar boy.
The video, which captured the priest delivering a heavy knock to the boy’s head for failing to hold a microphone steady during a wedding ceremony, sparked widespread outrage across Nigeria.
Following the incident, the priest issued an apology; however, it was surprising to many when the boy’s family sided with him, claiming that there was nothing wrong with his actions. This prompted comedian Bovi to express his anger over the normalization of abuse in Nigerian society. He criticized the priest’s justification of his actions as “normal correction” and highlighted the troubling statement made by the boy’s father, who suggested he would have blamed the priest if he hadn’t intervened.
In response to Bovi’s comments, both Kate Henshaw and Etinosa Idemudia took to social media to share their thoughts. Henshaw condemned the priest’s actions, labeling him as an “abuser.” She remarked, “This is just not a priest, this one na abuser!! Simple.”
Etinosa Idemudia further expanded on the issue, attributing the incident to a larger societal problem where abuse is normalized. She expressed concern over how many adults who have experienced trauma and psychological issues end up perpetuating the cycle of abuse within their families. She stated,
The thing is that we have been so used to abuse we see it as ‘normal.’ A lot of bruised adults today with anger issues and all sorts of psychological issues are coming to marry our sons and daughters and continuing the same sick cycle. It is well for Africa.”
