The Katsina State Government has issued a stern warning to former bandits who surrendered under the state’s peace initiative, cautioning them against any actions that could undermine the existing peace accord.
This warning comes amid reports of possible violations by some repentant bandits, raising concerns about the sustainability of the state’s amnesty program.
During a security meeting with stakeholders in Katsina, Governor Dikko Radda emphasized that the government would not tolerate any breach of the peace agreement.
He stated that while the administration remains committed to rehabilitation and reintegration programs for surrendered bandits, those who return to criminal activities will face the full weight of the law.
“We have offered peace through dialogue, but we will not hesitate to apply decisive measures against anyone who exploits this opportunity to continue causing havoc,” the governor declared.
The peace initiative, launched to curb banditry and kidnapping in the state, has seen hundreds of bandits surrender their weapons in exchange for amnesty.
However, recent security reports suggest that some individuals may be regrouping or maintaining ties with active criminal networks. Security agencies have been placed on high alert to monitor compliance with the peace terms.
Community leaders and traditional rulers at the meeting appealed for sustained dialogue while urging repentant bandits to honour their commitments. The state government also announced plans to enhance surveillance and intelligence-gathering efforts to prevent potential setbacks in the peace process.
Residents have expressed mixed reactions, with some praising the initiative for reducing violence while others remain sceptical about its long-term effectiveness.
The Katsina government maintains that the program remains vital for achieving lasting peace but insists that security operations will continue against unrepentant criminals.
