The Nigerian Senate witnessed a significant political shift as three senators from Kebbi State officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This event was marked by the presence of APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and members of the party’s National Executive Committee, who attended the Senate plenary to welcome the returning lawmakers.
Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau presided over the session, formally announcing the defections. The senators who switched allegiance are:
- Senator Adamu Aliero, representing Kebbi Central Senatorial District.
- Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, representing Kebbi North Senatorial District and a former leader of the 9th Senate.
- Senator Garba Maidoki, representing Kebbi South Senatorial District.
In their letters to the Senate, the senators cited internal crises within the PDP as the primary reason for their departure.
They expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” highlighting its efforts to address national challenges, including insecurity.
These defections are part of a broader trend of political realignments in Nigeria. Earlier in the year, the APC experienced a wave of defections from the PDP, with lawmakers like Garba Koko from Kebbi State and Amos Magaji from Kaduna State joining the ruling party, also citing internal disputes within the PDP.
The return of these Kebbi senators to the APC is expected to bolster the party’s influence in the Senate and reflects ongoing shifts in Nigeria’s political landscape.
