The race to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027 is gathering momentum, with political stakeholders in Lagos State rallying behind various potential candidates.
Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, is a prominent name in the mix.
Supporters, including Nollywood actor and lawmaker Desmond Elliot, believe his legislative experience and executive role make him a strong candidate. However, some within the APC question whether, at 64, he might be too old to lead a dynamic state like Lagos.
Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, is also considered a potential contender.
His recent remarks, hinting at his readiness for the role without making a formal declaration, have sparked speculation. Supporters emphasise his grassroots connections and legislative experience as key strengths.
Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, has also drawn attention, with some diaspora groups advocating for his candidacy. However, his potential run has stirred debate within the party, as the APC Governance Advisory Council (GAC) remains cautious, and the president has not endorsed his son.
From Epe, the current Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, is seen as a strong contender, with supporters arguing that the region deserves political rebalancing after Akinwunmi Ambode’s truncated second term.
Ikorodu stakeholders are pushing for either Rep Babajimi Benson or Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat to emerge as the next governor, with some also advocating for Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa as a deputy governor candidate if the position goes to another district.
As Lagos politics heats up, observers expect a competitive race, with regional balancing and political loyalty likely to play significant roles in the final decision.
