Nigerians took to the streets on Saturday to hold a nonviolent demonstration against the nation’s soaring cost of living.
To air their complaints against the government for the difficulty, the demonstrators—who include reportedly market women and men as well as young people—carried a variety of banners to the state’s Ibeju-Lekki region.
Women held posters reading “Tinubu, come and rescue us” and “Baba Tinubu, Nigerians are hungry” during the demonstration in Lagos’ Ibeju-Lekki neighbourhood.
Nigerians in the states of Kogi, Osun, Niger, and Kano have been protesting the country’s growing cost of living over the past several days.
Following the elimination of the fuel subsidy in May 2023, the cost of goods has increased nationwide.
According to Prof. Itse Sagay, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Nigerians suffered greatly as a result of President Bola Tinubu’s abrupt removal of the gasoline subsidy during his inauguration speech on May 29, 2023.
In an interview that aired on Channels Television on Friday, Sagay—who held the position of Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption under former President Mohammed Buhari—made this announcement.
