Lagos has achieved another international milestone, securing the 14th position in the latest ranking of the world’s best cities for nightlife.

The recognition, published by Time Out Magazine, also placed Lagos as Africa’s second-best nightlife destination, just behind Cape Town, South Africa.

The global lifestyle publication conducted extensive surveys among city residents and consulted nightlife experts to evaluate the vibrancy of after-dark entertainment in major urban centres.

According to the report, an overwhelming 79 per cent of Lagos residents praised the city’s nightlife, highlighting its dynamic energy, diverse offerings, and evolution from luxury lounges to underground rave scenes.

On the African continent, Lagos outperformed other major cities such as Cairo, Egypt (15th) and Marrakech, Morocco (19th), further cementing its reputation as a leading entertainment and cultural hotspot.

The ranking underscores the city’s thriving social scene, which continues to attract both locals and international visitors.

Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, attributed the achievement to the state government’s efforts in enhancing security and tourism infrastructure.

He noted that the ranking validates Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s security initiatives and the success of recent events like the widely celebrated “Detty December.”

Omotoso also revealed plans to formalise the state’s tourism calendar, with a focus on major year-end events.

Also, he announced that Lagos will make history as the first African city to host the prestigious EI (water race) Championship later in 2025, further boosting its global appeal. The recognition reinforces Lagos’ growing reputation as a must-visit destination for nightlife enthusiasts worldwide.
