Lagos State Govt urges calm as prolonged rainfall triggers flash floods across city

The Lagos State Government has called for calm among residents following over 12 hours of continuous rainfall that caused flash floods in several parts of the metropolis.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab issued the advisory on Monday, assuring citizens that the state’s flood control infrastructure remains operational but may experience temporary strain due to the unusually heavy downpour.

The warning comes as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) predicts sustained heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Lagos over the next 72 hours.

Wahab explained that coastal geography makes Lagos particularly vulnerable to rising lagoon levels during extended rainfall, which can create tidal backflow and slow stormwater drainage. He specifically cautioned residents in low-lying areas and waterfront communities to prepare for potential flash floods with strong currents.

Authorities issued multiple safety directives, including keeping children away from floodwaters and avoiding attempts to walk or drive through submerged roads where water depths remain unpredictable.

The commissioner particularly warned against the dangers of being swept away by strong currents or becoming trapped in flooded vehicles.

Wahab strongly condemned the persistent practice of dumping refuse in drainage channels, noting this significantly worsens flooding by obstructing water flow. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws against such violations.

Ongoing flood mitigation efforts include regular drainage maintenance and new contracts for concrete-lining critical channels to enhance water discharge capacity.

While acknowledging the state’s preparedness with mobilised emergency teams, the commissioner emphasised that extreme weather events require collective responsibility. Residents were urged to exercise heightened caution throughout the rainy season and comply with all safety advisories as the government continues monitoring the situation.

The statement reassured Lagosians that while temporary flooding may occur during exceptional rainfall, the drainage systems are designed to gradually normalise water levels once precipitation subsides.
