Liverpool is contemplating a January move for Kalvin Phillips as Manchester City is open to offers for the midfielder, reversing Jurgen Klopp’s earlier stance on the player.
Jurgen Klopp had expressed interest in Phillips earlier in the summer, but no formal offer was made as Liverpool was undergoing significant midfield changes.
The club had agreed on a deal with Brighton to sign Moises Caicedo, but the midfielder chose Chelsea instead. The Reds also pursued other midfield targets, including Romeo Lavia and Khephren Thuram.
Liverpool made several midfield signings, but Phillips’ situation at Manchester City has not improved. Since joining City a year ago, he has had limited playing time.
This season, he played only 77 minutes in substitute appearances in the Premier League and the Champions League. An error had even been made in registering his jersey number as three instead of five. Manchester City is now open to offers for Phillips.
Liverpool sees Phillips as a potential addition to provide defensive cover in midfield, a role not adequately filled by their recent signings. The midfielder is eager for more playing time, making him an attractive option for the club.
The potential move would signify a change in Klopp’s approach, and it could strengthen Liverpool’s squad as they aim for success in the Premier League and other competitions.
