The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported that a powerful magnitude 7 earthquake struck the Pacific island nation of Tonga on Sunday.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred approximately 100 kilometres northeast of Tonga’s main island at a depth of 10 kilometres. The tremor, which was felt across the region, raised concerns about potential aftershocks and secondary impacts.
Following the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert, warning that hazardous tsunami waves could impact coastlines within 300 kilometres of the quake’s epicentre. Residents and authorities in nearby coastal areas were advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Despite the strength of the earthquake, there were no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage at the time of this report. Emergency response teams are closely monitoring the situation, and further assessments are expected as more information becomes available.
Tonga, located along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. In recent years, the region has experienced several powerful quakes, some of which have triggered tsunamis, leading to widespread destruction.
Authorities are urging residents to stay alert for official updates and potential evacuation orders if conditions worsen.
The Tonga situation remains under close observation, with seismologists tracking aftershocks and any changes in ocean activity that could indicate further tsunami risks.
