Manchester United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, has shouldered the blame for his team’s shaky start to the season, admitting that he deserves criticism after conceding 10 goals in just five Premier League matches. The Cameroonian shot-stopper made a high-profile move to Old Trafford from Inter during the summer for a substantial fee of €51 million, tasked with replacing the legendary David De Gea.
Onana’s arrival coincided with a challenging period for Manchester United, losing three of their first five league games. Despite a battered defense due to injuries to key players like Raphael Varane, Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Harry Maguire, Onana acknowledged that it’s his responsibility as the goalkeeper to protect the net.
In his own words, Onana stated, “Clean sheet is for all of us. So when we concede goals, the responsibility is Andre Onana. My teammates are working hard. And if they have to point fingers, they have to point it at me because I’m the goalkeeper.”
The goalkeeper faces a daunting task in the upcoming UEFA Champions League match against Bayern Munich, where he will attempt to thwart the prolific Harry Kane. It remains to be seen how Onana fares against such top opposition with a makeshift defense in front of him.
