Nigerian singer Akinmayokun Awodumila, popularly known as May D, has shared details about his marital life and time in Sweden during an interview on the Honest Bunch Podcast.
The “Ile Ijo” crooner revealed that his European tour in Sweden marked a turning point in his personal life. While on tour, he reconnected with his long-time Swedish girlfriend, whom he had been dating since 2014. She had frequently visited him in Nigeria, and May D decided to reciprocate the gesture by visiting her country and meeting her parents.
Impressed by their warm reception, May D moved to Sweden, got a house, and married his girlfriend. During their marriage, the singer embraced the role of a house husband, staying home to care for their child while his wife worked a regular 9-to-5 job.
May D clarified that he made this choice willingly and that his wife wasn’t the one financially supporting him. Despite staying home, he continued to earn a living through his musical career and performances, making more money than his wife.
“I didn’t care about being a house husband because we had a child, and I was the one taking care of the child. My wife couldn’t be working and taking care of the baby at the same time,” he explained.
Unfortunately, their marriage ended during the COVID-19 lockdown when May D got stuck in Nigeria. He noted that their divorce wasn’t caused by infidelity but rather by distance and circumstances beyond their control.
Social media users had varied reactions to May D’s revelation:
- @Gstar3146: “This guy’s story is not clear at all.”
- @The_barracuda22: “So this guy threw his entire career away to go clap some white cheeks.”

Last year, May D made headlines when a Nigerian waitress accused him of failing to pay a balance of ₦11,000 for a meal. The waitress shared screenshots as evidence, and the incident sparked a wave of online backlash.
In response, May D admitted he was financially strained at the time and asked the waitress to send her account details, promising to settle the bill when he received his salary.
