Nigerian singer May D has issued a strong message on X (formerly Twitter), warning fans and critics to stop comparing him to his colleague, Wizkid. He emphasized his uniqueness in the music industry, calling himself “a different breed” and asking to be seen on his terms.
May D, whose real name is Akinmayokun Awodumila, has made it clear that he will no longer tolerate comparisons with other artists, particularly Wizkid. Taking to X, the artist expressed his frustration, stating, “Don’t ever compare me to anyone in this industry again!! Especially Wiz!! I’m a different breed!! God’s baby.”
In a follow-up post, May D shared a personal memory of attending an event where Wizkid performed his song Too Fine (a collaboration with Kel) while he stood in the crowd. Despite expressing admiration for Wizkid, he maintained that such comparisons are unwelcome. “I still love him to date but never compare,” he reiterated.
May D’s remarks have sparked mixed reactions online. While some fans supported his stance, others used the opportunity to ridicule him.
One user, Rosy Throne, commented, “I like the fact he knows where he belongs.”
Another, Real_mira_belle, wrote, “He’s right, don’t ever disrespect Wizkid like that.”
Others, however, took a more critical tone, with one user, Herbiibah, sarcastically stating, “Who dey compare Lion and Lizard? Abeg.”
May D has often been a subject of controversy. Earlier this year, he opened up about his past life as a stay-at-home dad in Sweden, explaining that it was a choice he made to care for his child while his now ex-wife worked a 9-5 job. Despite rumors, he clarified that he was financially independent at the time, earning more than his wife through his music career.
Additionally, in 2022, May D made headlines after a Nigerian waitress accused him of failing to pay an outstanding bill of ₦11,000. Responding to the accusations, the singer admitted financial struggles, promising to pay the debt once he received his salary.
