Reality TV star Mercy Eke has been inconsolable following the sudden shutdown of Heritage Bank, which has left her with over 100 million Naira stuck in her account.
Taking to the X app to express her distress, Mercy revealed her predicament when a concerned fan inquired about her situation.
Mercy Eke disclosed that she has more than one hundred million Naira deposited in Heritage Bank, and she’s at a loss on how to handle the situation, hoping for a positive resolution. “I don’t know how to react to the news; I’m just hoping for the best,” she wrote.
Fans quickly rallied around her, offering advice and support. One fan tried to reassure her by mentioning that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) would prioritize customers with five million Naira or less before attending to those with larger sums. However, Mercy responded with skepticism, suggesting that only five million Naira might be reimbursed in the end.
When asked why she had chosen Heritage Bank initially, Mercy explained that it was a requirement during her time in the BBNaija house, as their earnings were deposited there after the show. She funded the account, which she now regrets.
In a bid to offer some consolation, another fan mentioned that the National Deposit Insurance Company (NDIC) was willing to compensate customers who had accounts with the defunct bank. Mercy Eke shared a circular from the CBN indicating that customers with balances exceeding five million Naira would receive only that amount initially, with the remainder paid out upon the realization of the bank’s assets.
Further probing from fans about her bank manager’s advice revealed that her account manager had encouraged her to place her funds in a fixed deposit account despite being aware of the bank’s impending issues. This revelation added to her frustration and regret.
Mercy Eke’s ordeal with Heritage Bank has sparked a broader conversation about financial security and the challenges customers face when banks shut down unexpectedly. While her fans continue to offer support, the reality star remains hopeful for a resolution that will allow her to recover her trapped funds.
