Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering support for press freedom and the critical role of media in national development.
Speaking at Abuja on Tuesday, Idris emphasised that the president views journalists as essential partners in governance and democratic progress.
The minister, in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Rabiu Ibrahim, revealed that President Tinubu has consistently encouraged professional independence in discharging information management duties.
“From my first day in office, the president granted me full liberty to perform my role professionally,” Idris stated. “He recognises the media’s crucial function in nation-building and has repeatedly instructed me to execute my responsibilities without interference.”
Idris assured that the Tinubu administration has no intention of restricting media operations, describing press freedom as vital for national unity and governmental accountability.
“President Tinubu will never obstruct media work in any form,” he declared. However, the minister cautioned journalists to exercise responsibility in their reporting, particularly in a climate marked by societal divisions and misinformation.
While emphasising the media’s watchdog role, Idris urged practitioners to balance critical reporting with national stability considerations. “Journalists must distinguish between constructive scrutiny and content that could exacerbate societal tensions,” he advised. The minister expressed confidence in the resilience of Nigerian journalism despite industry challenges.
Addressing his former affiliation with the host organisation, Idris clarified he relinquished his position as Blueprint Newspapers’ chairman upon assuming ministerial duties. “I’m attending today as a guest, not in any official capacity with the newspaper,” he explained, noting his historical involvement in the event since its inception 14 years ago.
The minister’s remarks underscore the administration’s stance on maintaining an open media environment while advocating for responsible press that supports national cohesion.
